Dartmouth cheered March 2 as Ed Haldeman '70, chair of Dartmouth's Board of Trustees, made the announcement. "I don't think the Search Committee could have picked a better person for the job," says John Engelman '68 in this video of community responses.

Appointment generates international media coverage

A Google news search yielded 198 international news mentions of President-elect Kim's appointment, including extensive coverage in his native country of South Korea. Comments posted to the Wall Street Journal website included "Cheers to our College on the Hill," and "Extraordinary selection, couldn't be happier." Trustee T.J. Rodgers '70 told Bloomberg news that Kim would build upon Dartmouth's tradition of putting "its best professors in the classroom," while John Mathias '69, president of the Association of Alumni, said Kim is "a living example of how you can take advantage of higher education to do good." boston"Health pioneer to head Dartmouth"

Harvard medical anthropologist Dr. Arthur Kleinman told The Boston Globe: "[Kim] has the ability to cross the social sciences and the humanities with medicine, emphasize all the global connections, and make health central to the undergraduate experience." President-elect Kim, also an anthropologist, counts Kleinman as an important mentor.

ihe"Dartmouth's historic choice" notes that Kim will be one of only a small number of Asian American college presidents, and the first in the Ivy League. "This is an incredibly important appointment," said Charles Wang, a professor at the University of California at Berkeley and a founder of Asian Americans in Higher Education.
