sfdrStudents serve a range of communities over spring break
More than 60 Dartmouth students are participating in the Tucker Foundation's five Alternative Spring Break (ASB) programs in locations including rural Appalachia and a farm with migrant workers in Florida.

In a community of Haitian immigrants in the Dominican Republic, 12 undergraduates are building an Internet café and teaching math and English to children. Their pupils "come back at night asking to learn and play more," wrote Sahil Joshi '13.

Students are chronicling their experiences on a new blog, Our Dartmouth. (Above photos and posts from Maryam Zafer '12 in San Francisco, left, and Mike Lewis '11 in the Dominican Republic, right.)

kim At a send-off for the ASB students, President Jim Yong Kim told them, "You're going to have to be a little more followers, and co-workers ... and it's going to be hard for you because you were all chosen because you're leaders."

van deusonkimDan Van Deusen '11 wins Dartmouth Idol, President Jim Yong Kim makes a surprise appearance
In the third annual singing competition, Van Deusen of Delmar, N.Y. (left) garnered the most votes for his versions of "Open Arms" by Journey and a medley that included Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer." The video of students performing Michael Jackson's "Thriller," which includes President Kim's surprise appearance (right), has been viewed more than 23,000 times. Watch the video.
