sfProfessor publishes history of Dartmouth's relationship with Native Americans
Founded in part for the "instruction of Youth of the Indian Tribes" in 1769, Dartmouth's past is entwined with that of America's indigenous peoples. In The Indian History of an American Institution, Colin Calloway, the John Kimball, Jr. 1943 Professor of History, for the first time documents this shared history.

Read an interview with Calloway, who dedicated the 186-page book to "Dartmouth's Native American students, past, present, and future." Since 1970, more Native American students have graduated from Dartmouth than from all the other Ivy League schools combined. Jodi Archambault Gillette '91, the first Native American to be appointed as White House liaison with American Indian tribes, was the subject of the May/June Dartmouth Alumni Magazine cover story.
