"Alumnus designs 9/11 memorial"

Anderson Arad A conversation with Michael Arad '91, architect of National September 11 Memorial
"I wanted to create a memorial that had a quiet and stoic defiance to it that reflected what I saw here in the city," said Arad (immediate left) during this recent interview with Dartmouth's Justin Anderson (far left) at the memorial site in New York City. Arad also discussed his Dartmouth education and the eight-year process to create "Reflecting Absence," which will be dedicated on September 11, 2011. Watch the video.

Dartmouth is marking the 10th anniversary of the attacks during a ceremony at Dartmouth Hall and through a series of video interviews. In the first interview, then CEO of Goldman Sachs Henry Paulson '68 describes his 9/11 experience, which began while he was on a plane flying over Russia.

Though Hanover and Dartmouth were largely spared by the August 28 storm, nearby Vermont towns and villages including Quechee, South Royalton, and West Hartford were among those that suffered severe damage due to flooding. Led by the Tucker Foundation, Dartmouth employees donned work gloves and volunteered in hard-hit communities.

President Jim Yong Kim wrote in a message, "For many of our employees, friends, and neighbors, the powerful images seen on national newscasts and in online reports are far from abstract."
